Theme: Discussing Digital Freedom in India

Day & Date   :   Saturday, 16th January, 2016

Time              :   2.30 p.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Venue            :   Durbar Hall, Asiatic Society of Mumbai, Town Hall,

Shahid Bhagat Singh Road, Mumbai 400 001

Concept Note:

The internet  and social media, in particular,  has emerged as a powerful tool to mobilise people and spread a  particular ideology but also instantly to talk back to governments. The three common justifications  offered for restrictions on the freedom of speech: religion, privacy and national security, are also being  used to muzzle online expressions of  dissent as well as  initiate online surveillance and censorship. ‘Digital freedom’ is assuming greater importance especially since spaces for free expression are shrinking and sensitivity to these topics  is critical to the health of our democratic polity.  This seminar aims to initiate informed discussions among the youth of Mumbai on digital rights. Some of the issues the seminar hopes to illuminate are the  implications of  upturning of Section 66A of the Information Technology Act,  the concept of net neutrality,  online vigilantism  etc.  We propose to invite speakers  from  varied fields-  media,  industry  and digital campaigners to offer a rich and intellectually stimulating experience to the young participants of the seminar.
