“Two Cultures, One Language: Four 19th Century Gujarati Texts”

The Literary Club of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai is pleased to invite you to a talk by Tulsi Vatsal and Aban Mukherji titled “Two Cultures, One Language: Four 19th Century Gujarati Texts” on Wednesday 4th October at 5 p.m.

Apart from language, the translation of 19th century texts requires both a close understanding of the cultures being addressed as well as familiarity with the historical context in which the works were written. This talk will examine the relevance of four texts, two written by Parsis, two by Gujaratis and illustrate the distinctive style, tone and treatment of the authors.

Tulsi Vatsal, a graduate of Oxford University, is an independent researcher, writer and editor.
Aban Mukherji is a freelance writer and translator. She has a Master’s degree in History. They have co-translated a number of books from Gujarati.
