Captain Alexander Burnes of the 21st Bombay Native Infantry ranks among the foremost of nineteenth century British explorers. His detailed accounts of peoples and places he encountered while on missions in Kutch, in Sindh in the Bombay Presidency or navigating the 1000-mile course of the Indus river, were filled with new insights. Burnes also explored Punjab, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Persia, and opened the eyes of the Western world to ‘exotic’ lands and cultures.

Burnes was a member of the Managing Committee of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society as well as the Geographical Society of Bombay.
