ASM LitClub Talk
“Angels by the murky river: Collecting stories of unheard lives” by Shivaji Das
on Friday, 3rd March, 2017, at 4.30 p.m.
The Asiatic Society of Mumbai Literary Club is happy to invite you to a talk on the book “Angels by the murky river: Collecting stories of unheard lives” by the author Shivaji Das on Friday, 3rd March, 2017, at 4.30 p.m. in the Durbar Hall of the Society.
“Angels by the murky river” is a collection of thirty-one stories of encounters with people who otherwise would not attract a tourist’s attention. They are the homeless people in Mumbai and Seoul, ageing anarchists in Melbourne, crew onboard a container ship, poverty-stricken diamond miners in Indonesia, monks in the city of Singapore, farmers-turned-painters in Morocco and China, and Filipino women boxers, to name a few.
The stories come from sixteen countries where the author has travelled. They document the immense diversity of the human condition, resilience in the midst of adversity, capacity for creativity, kindness and humour, irrespective of the background.
Shivaji Das was born and brought up in Assam. Currently, he is working as a Management Consultant in Singapore after graduating from IIT, Delhi and IIM, Calcutta.
His writings have been published in magazines such as TIME, Asian Geographic, Outlook Traveller, etc. His photographs, taken in collaboration with his wife, Yolanda Yu, have been widely exhibited. His other books include “Journeys with the Caterpillar : Travelling through the islands of Flores and Sumba, Indonesia” and “Sacred Love: Erotic art in the temples of Nepal.”
We look forward to seeing you on this occasion.
