Dr. Aroon Tikekar, noted and erudite scholar-researcher, eminent writer, bibliophile, and veteran editor passed away suddenly on 19th January 2016. He had contributed immensely to the intellectual life of Mumbai and Maharashtra in the last four decades through his vast collection of essays, editorials, opinion articles and books. He had also nurtured the tradition of well-researched historical and sociological studies.  

Dr. Tikekar was the President of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai for six years (from 2007 to 2013) during which he had initiated several projects to enthuse and motivate young research scholars, and had infused new ideas and programmes in this renowned institution. Even after his tenure as the President, he continued to be a friend, philosopher and guide to scholars. In recognition of his sterling scholarship, Dr Tikekar was accorded, in November 2015, the highest honour bestowed by the Society viz. the Fellow of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai.

The Asiatic Society of Mumbai has set up the Dr Aroon Tikekar Centre for Advanced Studies to honour his remarkable work and carry forward its tradition. This Centre will be dedicated to nurturing scholars and generating research in a number of fields with which Dr. Tikekar was associated.

The Second Dr. Aroon Tikekar Memorial Fellowship will be awarded on his birth anniversary on February 1, 2018. The research areas chosen for this year are:

i.   Journalism - Shaping public opinion through discourse

ii.   Journalism - The pursuit of credibility

iii.  Journalism - Challenges of the new media and emerging technologies

S​cholars, academics, researchers and others are invited to apply for this prestigious Fellowship. The Application Form is available at The Asiatic Society of Mumbai office and can also be downloaded from its website

The completed Application Form along with the research proposal should reach the Asiatic Society of Mumbai by November 15, 2017. These should be submitted as hard copies (soft copies on e-mails will not be accepted).

The Fellow will have one year to complete his/his work and will be awarded a total amount of Rs.1.25 lakh towards the Fellowship. All those who are interested (age limit - 30 to 65 years ) are welcome to apply. The research may be undertaken either in English or in Marathi. A jury comprising eminent experts in the field will select the scholar/ researcher.
