The Literary Club of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai takes pleasure in inviting you to a talk by author Manil Suri on his latest book “The Big Bang of Numbers: How to Build the Universe Using Only Maths” on Tuesday 24th January at 5 pm in the Durbar Hall of the Society. Dr. Manil Suri is a distinguished Professor in Mathematics, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA.

This talk is specially designed for non-mathematicians, and will reveal connections that mathematics has with the everyday which many may not have thought of before!
Picture yourself at a starting point before anything exists - no matter, no cosmos, not even empty space. Your task is to create the universe, but all you have to work with is, quite literally, ‘nothing’. How do you proceed? Traditionally, you might expect physics or religion to try and answer this question, but what if you turn to mathematics instead? The resulting thought experiment gives an insightful new way of looking at mathematics - one in which you build the numbers out of nothing, and then, through a playful progression of mathematical creation, are able to arguably design everything else in the universe!

Manil Suri, a distinguished Professor in Mathematics, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Maryland, is the author of three best-selling novels - The Death of Vishnu, The Age of Shiva and The City of Devi, which have been cumulatively translated into 27 languages. His co-authored play, 'The Mathematics of Being Human', has been performed at multiple venues, including the American Centre, New Delhi. He is a former ‘Contributing Opinion Columnist', New York Times, for which he has written several essays on India as also on mathematics. His new book, The Big Bang of Numbers: How to Build the Universe Using Only Maths, will be available for purchase and signing after the talk.
