Walking the Bazaar Series
Sunday, 13th July 2025 at 11.30 a.m.

Walking The Chor Bazaar with Rajan Jayakar, brought to you by the Mumbai Research Centre of The Asiatic Society of Mumbai.

Step into the storied lanes of Chor Bazaar, one of Mumbai’s oldest and most iconic flea markets, with the Mumbai Research Centre of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai. Once known as Shor Bazaar (the “noisy market”), its name famously morphed into Chor Bazaar — the “thieves’ market” -— during British rule, a mispronunciation that stuck and shaped its legend.

Today, Chor Bazaar is a vibrant maze of antique shops, vintage collectibles, colonial-era curios, and cinematic treasures. From old Bollywood posters to Victorian furniture and rare oddities, the market is a haven for history lovers, bargain hunters, and storytellers alike. Join us as historian Rajan Jayakar unpacks the layered past of this bustling bazaar and reveals the tales hidden behind its timeworn facades.
