Jashn e Dastaan e Mumbai will be a three-day online festival organised by the Mumbai Research Centre of the Asiatic of Society of Mumbai, the storyteller of Urbs Prima in Indis for over two centuries. The funds raised through this festival will contribute to the Society’s Conservation, Digitization & Research Projects.
Several event and activities have been planned for the festival, including a number of curtain raiser contests to raise interest. The following activities are planned to run for nearly a month before the festival actually starts:
1. Instagram Live Sessions: Live broadcasts over the social network Instagram. These will consist of a member of the organizing committee chatting freely with participants in the festival as well as eminent citizens of the city. These sessions, which started on 18th November, will run for a month on a nearly daily basis, and are intended to raise interest in the festival among social media users. This is by invitation only.
2. Growing Up in Bombay: An online activity primarily for senior citizens and expatriates who can reminisce about the Bombay of yore – like trams and double decker buses, restaurants, bookstores and theatres that have closed, streets and localities whose identities have changed completely, and so on. 3. Asiatic Saga: An online activity for members of the Asiatic Society to share information about the history of the society, including old lectures, public receptions, convocations, public addresses etc since its founding in 1804. 4. Mumbai Local: An activity for members of the public to send in trivia and unknown information about Mumbai. 5. Zayka-e-Mumbai: An activity for members of the public to send in recipes, facts and stories about food in Mumbai – ranging from traditional family recipes to lost restaurants, food stalls, khau gallis as well as dishes that have now been forgotten. 6. Aina-e-Mumbai: A photography competition that is open to all members of the public to capture the various colours and moods of Mumbai. The complete rules can be found here. Those who wish to participate may upload their entries along with the participation form here. We will display shortlisted photographs and declare the winners on the last day of the festival.
7. Jashn-e-Haiku: An activity for members of the public to write haiku in English about Mumbai. Those who wish to participate may fill in the form here. Winning haiku will be declared on the last day of the festival.
8. Book Review Contest: An activity for school, college and university students only. Participants are required to register online and subsequently write a review about any one book dealing with Mumbai, whether fiction or non-fiction. Winning reviews will be declared on the last day of the festival.
9. Forgotten Mumbai: An activity for school, college and university students only. Participants are required to register online and subsequently make a ten-minute presentation about hidden or forgotten aspects of Mumbai’s heritage, tangible, intangible or natural, such as tram tracks, gas lamps, fire hydrants, railway paraphernalia, theatre companies, avian visitors, endemic animals and plants etc. They may send in their entries to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by 30th November 2020. Shortlisted participants will be asked to make a presentation of 10minutes each on 20th December 2020.
Mumbai Heritage Quiz: Open to all citizens, this quiz will cover the History & Culture of Bombay including Natural, Built and Intangible Heritage, Important Personalities and Events and other aspects. A written preliminary will be held at 4 PM on 12th December 2020. The prelim will last for an hour, delivered over Google Forms, and have 50 one-word answer and multiple choice questions to be answered in 30 minutes. 6 finalist teams will be selected for a live quiz on 18th December 2020. Those wishing to participate may fill in this form and pay the entry fee of Rs. 100/- only.
