Summary
This lecture series is aimed at providing learners with an appreciation of the work and planning that go into the conservation of antiquities. It is thus intended to focus on technique and processes, as opposed to showcasing successes. Headlined by leading conservators in diverse fields, this series aims to cover the theory, science, materials and methods that go into each restoration process, whether concerned with archaeological monuments; heritage buildings and street furniture; books, maps and manuscripts; or paintings and sculpture.
Some of the topics intended to be covered are:
Pre-conservation inspection and documentation of the building/object
Clearance and cleansing if necessary
Visualizing the pre- and post-conservation status through maps, plans, models, diagrams etc
Chemical, physical and biological tests if any are required
Choice of the material to be used for replacing damaged parts of necessary
Selecting and briefing the artisans for specific needs such as carving architectural members, painting, weaving, etc
Reassembly of the building/object
Post-conservation SOP to prevent deterioration
Guidelines for users and tourists as well as museologists
Challenges in funding for conservation
