The Asiatic Society of Mumbai invites you to a talk “Congress Radio: Voice of Freedom in 1942” by Dr. Usha Thakkar, on Wednesday 6th October 2021 at 6.30 p.m. on Zoom.
Dr. Usha Thakkar will narrate the compelling story of passion and daring of how a 22 year old student of Wilson College, Usha Mehta, with the help of her colleagues, started an underground radio station in August 1942 to broadcast reliable news and to disseminate information about the struggle against the coercive rule of the British Government.
The clandestine Congress Radio continued to broadcast news and messages from prominent leaders to the masses, fighting the disinformation for almost three months till the arrest of its members in November of the same year.
The book “Congress Radio: Usha Mehta and the Underground Radio Station of 1942” by Dr. Usha Thakkar was published in August 2021 by Penguin.
Dr. Usha Thakkar is President, Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahalaya and Honorary Fellow, Asiatic Society of Mumbai.
