The Literary Club of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai cordially invites you to “Buddha’s Bowl @ Ajanta, a presentation by Vithal C. Nadkarni, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Ajanta’s rediscovery, on Friday, 7th February, 2020, at 5.30 p.m., in the Durbar Hall of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai.
Buddha’s Bowl @ Ajanta: In the 200th year of Ajanta’s rediscovery, Vithal C. Nadkarni takes an analytic look at the changing narratives sparked by this World Heritage site. The re-imaging of the Ajanta Apsara, whether in the East or in the West, is hardly a new phenomenon.
Still, how does one evaluate Ajanta’s influence on maestros such as Auguste Rodin, for example? And on thinkers like Schumacher, the so-called Buddhist socialists, not to forget celebrities such as Robert Thurman, Richard Gere and Steven Seagal? What can the wannabe genius and acolyte of today hope to learn and imbibe from the masterful murals that have had an abiding influence not just on Indian art but also on a global scale? More importantly, how can we revitalise our hearts, minds and lives with this enchanting artistic legacy?
Vithal C. Nadkarni is a former Science Editor of The Times of India, and a Consulting Columnist with The Speaking Tree; and also a Vice-President of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai.
Do join us for this enriching and elevating experience.
Tea will be served at 5.00 p.m.
