tolerance in our musical compositions” by Vithal C Nadkarni
in the Durbar Hall on Friday 15th July at 5 p.m.

The Literary Club of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai is pleased to invite you to a talk by Vithal C Nadkarni on the gharanas of Indian classical music titled “Cultures of Confluence: Multi-faith tolerance in our musical compositions” in the Durbar Hall of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai on Friday 15th July at 5 p.m.
Whether it is “Pratham dhar dyan Ganesh” by Rampur Ustad Inayat Khan or “Sumira Saheb Sultan by Agra doyen Pandit S N Ratanjarkar, Muslim Ustads and Hindu Pandits have for centuries celebrated each other’s faiths and festivals with brilliant compositions. These are lovingly sung and shared across the Indian sub-continent till this very day. What is the cultural and philosophical history of this super inclusive Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb or tradition? How did it evolve and spread across the gharanas of Indian classical music?
Writer-columnist and former Vice-President of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai, Vithal C Nadkarni, presents a coruscating horde of these ecumenical treasures in a lecture demonstration. Do join us for an evening of evocative music that will transport you into a world of new experiences.
Tea will be served at 4.30 pm.

- Prof. Mangala Sirdeshpande, Officiating Hon. Secretary Asiatic Society of Mumbai
- Meenal Kshirsagar, Vice President of the Society & Chairperson - ASM LitClub
