Myths and folktales of the metropolis (Part 1)
[A three-part talk on the myths, legends and folklore around Mumbai
with Arundhuti Dasgupta and Utkarsh Patel]
Much like other ancient cities from across the world, Mumbai as it is called today is built upon a mound of folk tales, legends and myths that define its character and also reveal the nature of the people who made this city their home. This talk will cover:
The many origin myths of Mumbai. What led to their emergence? What is the significance and the symbolism involved in these stories
The city as a trail of goddesses: Each goddess has scores of myths and legends associated with her. How did so many goddesses come to be associated with Mumbai? What is their role in its development and how must we understand their presence in the city’s mythic landscape
The Haji Ali shrine stands out as a unique place of worship — located in the ocean and one that attracts scores of pilgrims even today, how did this site come to be seen as a holy site by people from all over the world.
