Mumbai (Bombay), the city of dreams, has been a culturally vibrant and economically thriving city since the late seventeenth century. Dramatic increase in its population and area, every few years resulted in diverse transport systems being commissioned by the state, and which have since proven to be the saving grace in enhancing the internal and external connectivity of the city. This series will take the participants on an enriching journey into the history of various transport systems.

Navigating the Corte do Norte of Portuguese India
A Free Virtual Tour of the Bassein Fort
When Bombay or Mumbai was still a seemingly insignificant cluster of marshy islands, Bassein stood as the proud northern capital of the Portuguese territories. A centre once bustling with trade and commerce, institution and industry, aristocracy and clergy, Bassein or Baçaim can be dubbed “praelusio urbs prima in Indis.” A silent witness to history’s meanderings, the monumental presence of the fortified city of Bassein can now only be felt through its ruins. Here, nature and structure have found a rhythm of growth and decay, enough to preserve a semblance of its former grandeur.
Join us as we navigate the historical and urban intricacies woven into the defense and religious architecture of the Fort to flesh out a two hundred year record of the rise and subsequent decline of this once famed walled city.

URBS PRIMA IN INDIS: THE MAKING OF BOMBAY
“The first city of India”! The Mumbai Research Centre brings to you a virtually vivid experience of a journey in and around Mumbai’s Fort area via live lectures covering over 50 historical sites. These provide a backdrop to the making of the Urbs Prima in Indis-the city that emerged as a unique microcosm of five global types of architecture within a closely integrated urban space in a span of a hundred years. These lectures will explore the ‘new city’and its infrastructure, as envisaged by Sir Bartle Frere,through some key themes of architecture, iconography, shipping and the sea, railways and iconic railway stations, financial institutions while simultaneously unravelling the city’s historical evolution and its changing urban geography.
