The Literary Club of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai takes pleasure in inviting you to an “In Conversation” with Murali Ranganathan on his Translation from Gujarati of The First World War Adventures of Nariman Karkaria, at 5.00 p.m. on Tuesday 16th April 2024. The translator will be In Conversation with Prof Vispi Balaporia, President of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai.

Nariman Karkaria (1894 –1949) joined the British Army during the First World War and saw action on three different fronts. His Gujarati war memoir, Rangbhoomi par Rakhad, was published in 1922. His second book, Iranbhoomi par Rakhad (1925), is an account of his year-long rambles in Iran.
Murali Ranganathan is a Mumbai-based historian and translator. He researches on the history of the nineteenth century, with a special focus on Mumbai and western India. His translation, from Marathi, of the iconic Mumbaiche Varnan was published in 2008 as Govind Narayan’s Mumbai: An Urban Biography from 1863.

"Recasting the Indosphere: Indic Strategy for Sinic Challenge" by Pulind Samant
on Monday 8th April 2024 at 5.00 p.m. in the Durbar Hall of the Society
The Literary Club of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai takes pleasure in inviting you to the book launch and discussion programme of “Recasting the Indosphere: Indic Strategy for Sinic Challenge” [A Brief Review of Historical Connection of Indic Civilisation with Southeast Asia and Its Implications in Today's Geopolitics] by Pulind Samant on Monday, 8th April 2024, at 5.00 p.m. in the Durbar Hall of the Society. The programme will be presided by Dr. Uttara Sahasrabuddhe, former Head of the Department of Civics & Politics, University of Mumbai.
This book is an offshoot of the Ph.D. research undertaken by the author on a related topic. Although the topic-specific research is work-in-progress, the need to publish a dedicated research on a diversion discovered on the way was felt necessary, being highly relevant with the backdrop of the ongoing power-rivalry between China and India, which appears to have sharpened since the re-emergence of the construct of the Indo-Pacific..
Pulind Samant has done his Master's degree in Labour Studies from the University of Mumbai. He pursued a corporate career in the profession of Human Resource Management, between 1990 and 2017, after which he began his second career of academic pursuits. He has a few research articles and papers published in his area of interest i.e. international relations pertaining to the India-centric geopolitical & strategic dimensions of the Southeast Asia region.
Pulind is also a professional translator; his latest Marathi translation ‘धर्म माझा वेगळा: पाश्चात्य वैश्विकीकरणाला दिलेले भारतीय आव्हान' ’ of the seminal work of Rajiv Malhota, 'Being Different: An Indian Challenge to Western Universalism' was published in June 2023, and was well received.
